Atheists are deluding themselves

with 11 comments

So says Adam Smith, a Christian. And it must be true as it says so in the Bible, apparently. Let me explain. I stumbled across this little gem when I found myself at The Ultimate Goal yesterday. Whilst there I happened to read a post called Why Atheism Does Not Exist which explains that atheists are really believers in denial! Mr Smith is adamant that it’s a biblical truth that “all men know that there is a God” and goes on to quote from Romans 1:19-20 to lend credence to his claim:

19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

Of course, Mr Smith will think me a liar for saying this, but God has never been “evident” or “clearly seen” where I’m concerned. And it’s not like I haven’t attempted to seek him out, I have. But, seriously, what else can he think? He believes the Bible to be the word of God, the very same Bible that tells of a talking donkey, a woman who’s turned into a pillar of salt and a man who loses all of his strength when he gets a haircut. Truly wonderful stuff, if you’re a comedian looking for new material.

I was curious about the verses in question, so I opened my very dusty Bible to Romans 1 and read them in context, and I noticed something interesting. Consider the following:

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, … 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. … 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. … 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,

As you can see, I’ve underlined what I think are pertinent points from the chapter. I wonder if Mr Smith could enlighten me as to how I can suppress that which I’ve not known, know something that’s never been revealed to me, exchange a truth for an untruth when I have no prior knowledge of the truth and acknowledge someone who as far as I’m concerned has never revealed his existence to me? It seems abundantly clear to me that Paul the Apostle was referring to those who had at some time or other been devout believers and, consequently, privy to divine knowledge but who had nevertheless chosen unrighteousness over righteousness. So I think it would be incorrect to use verses 19 and 20 as “proof” that all atheists are lying when they say that they have no belief in God.

Besides, I find it annoying that atheists are judged by some small-minded Christians who have no idea of the road they’ve travelled to get to where they are today. I find that it makes them very difficult, perhaps impossible, to respect. It’s typical of the way they divide everything into black and white. Heaven forfend that somebody looks at the world and sees something other than God’s hand in it.

At the end of his post, Smith arrogantly proclaims:

My name is Adam Smith and I wrote this based on Biblical truth; I stand behind it 100 percent. I will not back down from God’s truth and I will not be moved.

Some Christians think that quoting the Bible gives them a licence to be insulting and disparaging towards those who don’t share their beliefs. As soon as this is pointed out to them they deny that they’re being offensive and excuse themselves by claiming that they are just repeating God’s word, as if this justifies their rudeness. It appears that employing a verse or two of scripture covers a multitude of sins.

  1. For one horrible moment I thought you meant the friend of David Hume, the avatar which I use on worldpress and other sites (the economist Adam Smith).

Good to look at the evidence and see it was not so.

Mind you using the bible the way the writer does is like me in an economic argument using “The Wealth of Nations” and saying it is in there so it must be right.

  2. I told this guy that he was only a Christian because he didn’t want to acknowledge the truth of the FSM.

Strangely enough, my comment never made it out of moderation.

  3. Isla…

A believer is someone who not only acknowledges the existence of God, but also follows Him at His word. There are only two kinds of people as far as the Bible is concerned: believers and unbelievers. It is not about my beliefs; it is about whether or not you believe and follow God, or do not believe. As far as I see it, there are no Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists, Mormons, Catholics, etc…just believers and unbelievers based on the inerrancy of Scripture.

My whole point of that was to say that no where in my post did I say that “atheists” are really believers in denial, because that is just not the case.

As far as what the Bible gives me a license for, it gives me a license to tell the truth, and if I come off as insulting, offensive, or rude to someone who does not believe it, then so be it, and I will not apologize for that.

    Remember, Jesus loves you.

    Mike…

Yeah, strange how that did not make it into my blog. Go figure.

  4. Nobody saw God to tell about it. God, as we know him, is a perception. Its one man’s perception against another. A debate on God therefore is endless which I think is reason enough why we don’t have great religious debates like people did, say, 40 or 50 years ago.

  5. It’s amazing that Mike (Adam Smith) writes that homeopathy and naturopathy are a combination of placebo or psychology and he alludes that it’s quackery that ‘hoodwinks’ people…that’s what I think about god.

Well, I can’t say that I’m surprised – you’re hardly likely to acknowledge the truth of the FSM that lies in your heart.

  8. Adam,

    ***Isla…***

Isla (my wife) didn’t write this post. I did. My name’s at the beginning of it and again at the end.

***A believer is someone who not only acknowledges the existence of God, but also follows Him at His word. There are only two kinds of people as far as the Bible is concerned: believers and unbelievers. It is not about my beliefs; it is about whether or not you believe and follow God, or do not believe. As far as I see it, there are no Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists, Mormons, Catholics, etc…just believers and unbelievers based on the inerrancy of Scripture.***

The Bible is clearly wrong, and so are you for believing it hook, line and sinker and regurgitating its nonsense to all and sundry. You obviously find great difficulty in being able to think outside of it’s pages. Atheists are non-believers, as they’re without a belief in your God or any other gods.

***My whole point of that was to say that no where in my post did I say that “atheists” are really believers in denial, because that is just not the case.***

You don’t have to use those exact words to say it. According to you, atheists are people who know that there is a God but who deny him.

***As far as what the Bible gives me a license for, it gives me a license to tell the truth, and if I come off as insulting, offensive, or rude to someone who does not believe it, then so be it, and I will not apologize for that.***

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not after an apology. But what I want to say is that I strongly object to your presumptuous piety. Consider the following sentences from your blog entry:

Not only do all people know that there is a God, but they know enough about the real God to hate Him and they try to drive Him from their thoughts … All men (people) know that they have sinned and they know that there is a judgment day coming. They may deny it, they may mock it, they may even try to explain it away, but they know that there is coming a day when every man (person) will stand before a Holy God – it is a reality.

Contrary to what you think, I don’t know any of those things. But because the Bible says so-and-so you have the audacity to think that you know me when the truth of the matter is you absolutely don’t. Only I’m intimately aware of what I know and don’t know, and what I think about things. You aren’t, so I can categorically say that you’re wrong.

Essentially, you’re telling me that what I know about myself is a lie because your reading of the Bible says different and, as I can’t recognise the lie, I must have at some point in my life been involved in some kind of subterfuge with myself to cover up from myself a knowledge of God’s existence. Sounds ridiculous? Well, it is. But you don’t believe me, do you? Can’t you see how bloody stupid this all is?

    ***Remember, Jesus loves you.***

So now you’re implying that I once had knowledge of Jesus’s love for me? Will it never end?!

  9. Homoeconomicusnet,

***Good to look at the evidence and see it was not so.***

I was considering coming at it in the same way that this person does, but as I noticed that the passage was out of context I decided to go down that route.

    Mike,

***Strangely enough, my comment never made it out of moderation.***

    Strange, indeed. 😉

Me too. But I think that you’re confusing Mike with Adam Smith, as it was Mike who wrote that.

  11. “all men know that there is a God” is simply false. Anyone who has been brought up in an environment where there is not mention of god is ignorant to the concept. Children have no concept of god until the idea is exposed to them. This is but another lame claim. In rebuttal to this claim, you might be interested in my post, Second hand Consequences – http://www.travisjmorgan.com/blog/2008/01/11/secondhand-consequences/
